Why is your face like this?

Last night I came home completely drained and without energy. I lay on the couch watching a DVD when Nevan, my 4 year old asked me, “Why is your face like this?” (And he scrunched up his face) “Why do you look mean?”

It made me laugh. I haven’t heard him talk about emotions before, it was a funny and proud moment all at the same time. I guess my face had a strained look on it, and Nevan recognized that.

And later, Liam, my 2 year old sauntered by to check on me. He grabbed a cup on the coffee table and asked, “Is this your cup?” I replied with no. He asked, “Is this mum’s cup?” I replied with yes. Then he found his water bottle, one of those sport bottles that you pull the spout up and squeeze for water. He asked me, “Can you open my water? I can’t.”

This was one of the first decently full sentences I have heard him speak. It’s awesome. He’s realizing what he wants, understands he doesn’t know how to achieve what he is wanting, and is asking for help. These are the moments…
