Australia defeats Japan at the World Cup
by Mike250 on June 12th, 2006 in Football
I awoke early this morning to log on to my computer at home and see Australia head into it’s first World Cup appearance in 32 years. Our foe, Japan. Head to head the record stood at 4-3 in Japan’s favour in terms of wins. Australia is currently ranked 41st in the World and Japan 17th. I had to leave for work, and I have to say it is difficult to work when your country is playing on the biggest stage in the world. Japan was heavily favoured and took the lead in the 26th minute with a somewhat controversial goal when Aussie goal keeper Mark Schwarzer looked to have been interfered with.
From there it was a case of nerves and frustration as the Aussie’s mounted attack after attack but couldn’t penetrate the Japanese defences. The fact that we took more than twice as many shots at goal over the Japanese shows how much we threw at them. I thought we weren’t going to pull off an upset draw, let alone victory, as the match wound down towards the final 5 minutes. And then suddenly, pandemonium. Australia scored in the 84th minute to set the FIFA Yahoo! Live Game Cast room abuzz. What a relief I tell you, but it was to get so much better when in the 89th minute we scored again! Hearing a co-worker friend of mine in the hall (who is a soccer fan), I rushed out to give him the good news. Another co-worker was also out there and we had a quick 3-way discussion about soccer and the World Cup in general. The good news was Australia had taken the lead 2:1 and surely had the game now. As I took my seat in my office not 4 minutes later, I was shocked to read the score was 3:1! We had scored *again* in the 92nd minute and won the game. Australia became the first team to win from behind in the 2006 World Cup. We recorded our first ever goal and win in the World Cup. Within moments my Instant Messenger was blinking as a few mates back home were going bonkers in celebration. Amazing. Simply Amazing! » Australia Socceroos on Yahoo!
