The Broken Arm Story
by Mike250 on May 22nd, 2007 in Family
Saturday Nevan broke his arm jumping on the trampoline. He was bouncing with brother Liam, uncle David and his mum’s cousin. The boys were bounced a little high, collided and fell. Liam fell safely but Nevan landed awkwardly and broke his right arm, his Radius, about 3/4 down. As mentioned in my previous post, this was while I was still in French Polynesia. When I finally landed back home he was there to greet me, full of smiles and showing off his temporary cast. Unfortunately that didn’t last too long as a routine visit to the doctor for a cast turned into something a little more complicated. His break (90% complete from being in two pieces) had separated in such a way that the bones were at angles to each other and in real danger of not growing back straight.
Nevan was sent to the hospital for minor surgery, a process where he would be anesthetized, re-broken and the bone manually (forcibly) corrected straight. He started to feel a good deal of pain as he hadn’t been allowed to eat or take medication since earlier in the day. We tried to keep him entertained. At around 7:30pm it was time for Nevan to be wheeled away to surgery. It pained us to lose sight of his face and wonder what was going through his mind as he was escorted away from all he knew towards all he didn’t know. It had to be scary and we’ll probably never know what went through his mind up to the point the gas took away his consciousness.
A little more than an hour later we got the news that his bone was straight, the x-Rays were presented for proof and we were taken to the post-surgery recovery room. He was there, still out and attached to an IV, heart monitor and wearing an oxygen mask. I don’t care who you are or how serious the problem is; seeing your child plugged in will never be a welcome feeling. Today he is on medication, we’re to watch for swelling and just make sure he is as comfortable as possible. I’m working from home at his request and might do so this week as much as possible. How do you say no to a little champion? G’day Mike. It’s good that the bendy break was detected early, and I’m glad to hear the surgery went well. Here’s to Nevan making a full recovery!

Good on ya Nevan! I remember when Autumn broke her wrist in a high speed collision with the ground. I was so proud of her ability to deal with the pain. I’ll bet you did a great job too
And surgery, wow! As odd as it’s gonna sound, congratulations big guy! You’ve been through a lot and if the pics are a judge you were a trooper throughout. Best to ya from Chey, Autumn and many snakies
