Family Abseiling Adventure at Mt Keira, Wollongong

We recently spent a spectacular day abseiling at Mt Keira in Wollongongโ€”an unforgettable experience made even more special thanks to my longtime mate from high school, Shane Murphy, whoโ€™s a qualified instructor through the Navy. With his expertise (and signature flair), Shane guided the boys through a day of ropes, heights, and pure adrenaline.

Mt Keira is a well-known spot for abseiling and rock climbing, with established routes, solid anchors, and panoramic views stretching across Wollongong and the coastline to the south. Itโ€™s a local gem that never disappoints, and this time was no different.

For Hayden (6) and Liam (12), this was their first-ever abseiling experienceโ€”and they nailed it. Hayden especially impressed us all, showing almost no fear and jumping straight into it with confidence beyond his years. Nevan and I had been a few times before, but watching the younger boys take their first steps backward over a cliff edge was something else.

Of course, Shane had to show us how itโ€™s really doneโ€”sprinting down the face forward like a pro, much to the kids' amazement. Meanwhile, Shaneโ€™s partner Helena spent the day with Jen and baby Katherine (1), enjoying the sunshine and taking in the mountain air. It truly was the kind of day that ticks every boxโ€”adventure, family, friendship, and views for days.

Weโ€™ll be back. And next time, maybe Katherine will be asking for a harness too.
