As the new year approaches, itโs time to say goodbye to Townsvilleโalways bittersweet after such a full and lively stay. We hitch up the caravan once more and begin the journey south, first stopping in Yeppoon, a breezy coastal town on the Capricorn Coast.
Our base in Yeppoon is the NRMA Capricorn Holiday Park, where the weather is postcard-perfect and the kids waste no time diving into poolside activities and outdoor movies. One of the first things they do is head straight to the open-air cinema, awaiting a screening of Happy Feet. The park offers a classic holiday vibe with beach access, picnic spots, and a family-friendly atmosphere that wraps you up and slows you down.
From Yeppoon, we make our way south all day and then finally inland to Neurum Creek Bush Retreat, tucked away in Queenslandโs hinterland. Itโs remote, peaceful, and the perfect off-grid location to bring in the new year. With no reception and no distractions, it becomes about connection. We chose this location after discovering that one of the boys' mates would be in nearby Woodford, and it turned into the perfect excuse to explore somewhere new.
The setting is simple: bushland, clear skies, and the occasional wallaby hopping past. We toast to the year ahead with our first drinks of 2016 at the Woodford Village Hotel's garden bar, a charming country pub that feels like the kind of place where time stands still.
After thousands of kilometres, countless swims, shared meals, roadside stops, and one very well-travelled caravan, we pull back into our driveway with full hearts and tired eyes. The road may have ended, but the stories will keep rolling for years to come.
