Birthdays are best spent with good company, a touch of adventure, and something a little indulgent. My 41st birthday delivered on all fronts with a weekend at Paperbark Camp in Jervis Bay. Tucked away in the peaceful bushland near Huskisson, this was luxury camping done right.
Glamping in the Australian Bush
Our canvas safari tent felt more like a boutique hotel room than a campsite. Inside was a comfortable bed dressed in crisp linen, and the real standout was the open-air ensuite. There is something special about bathing outdoors, surrounded by gum trees and birdsong. At night, we took turns in the deep bathtub under the stars. That peace was briefly interrupted when a curious possum decided to investigate and gave my toe a cheeky nip in the dark. Being bitten on the toe by a possum is certainly a unique Aussie experience.
Exploring Jervis Bay
When we ventured beyond the camp, Jervis Bay delivered all its usual charm. Huskisson was as welcoming as ever, offering scenic beaches and plenty of spots to sit back with a coffee. We packed a gourmet picnic basket full of treats and spent the afternoon enjoying the outdoors with nothing but time on our hands.
Kayaking and Wine
One of the highlights of the weekend was kayaking on the river with Gill. We took it slowly, drifting through the calm waters with a glass of red wine in hand. It was a simple moment, but one that perfectly captured the tone of the trip. Peaceful, effortless, and a little bit special.
The Perfect Way to Mark a Birthday
This was not about loud celebrations or big events. It was about switching off and enjoying the beauty around us. Spending that time with Gill in such a serene setting reminded me that sometimes the best way to celebrate is by doing less, not more. Great food, beautiful surroundings, a little wildlife mischief, and a lot of quiet joy. I would not have changed a thing.
