Urquhart Castle, perched on the shores of Loch Ness in the village of Drumnadrochit, is a powerful reminder of Scotlandโs dramatic and often violent past. Once a strategic stronghold during the Wars of Scottish Independence, the castle passed through many hands, including the Grant Clan and the MacDonalds, each leaving their mark.
By 1692, Urquhart was deliberately destroyed to prevent its use by opposing forces. What remains today is a striking ruin that tells the story of resilience, power, and the inevitable passage of time.
Wandering the Ruins
Louise Connolly and I wandered slowly through the ruins, soaking in the atmosphere. The towering remnants of ancient walls and staircases told stories of battles, betrayals, and daily life in a long-lost era. There is something quietly powerful about standing in the ruins of a place that once held such importance.
Each corner revealed a new vantage point or hidden nook. Interpretive signs helped paint the historical picture, but the setting did much of the work on its own.
The Magic of Loch Ness
The view from the castle is nothing short of spectacular. Loch Ness stretched endlessly into the distance, its surface dark, still, and deeply mysterious. Even without any sightings of the famed monster, the loch exuded an eerie beauty.
Whether you believe in Nessie or not, it is impossible not to feel something when gazing out over those waters. The quiet hush, broken only by the occasional ripple, makes for a memorable moment.
A Highland Experience to Remember
Urquhart Castle left a lasting impression. The combination of epic scenery, deep history, and the magic of Loch Ness made for a truly unforgettable visit. This was one of those rare places that manages to be both peaceful and stirring at the same time.
If you ever find yourself in the Scottish Highlands, take the time to stop here. You will not regret it.
